Althorp House in West Northamptonshire—the 13,000-acre estate where Diana spent most of her childhood—has belonged to the Spencer family since 1508.
However since the family still observes male-preference primogeniture—the system of inheritance that passes property to the firstborn son—the stately home now belongs to Diana’s brother Charles, the current Earl Spencer.
Once Charles dies, the estate will be inherited by his son Louis—despite the fact that Louis has three older sisters.
Louis’ eldest sister Lady Kitty told Tatler in 2015, “I like that the house stays within the same family, with the same surname. I wouldn’t want it any other way for the Spencers. And I just know my brother is going to do an impeccable job.”
