Russia-Ukraine war enters its fifth year: ‘Hasn’t everyone had enough of this yet?’

Russia had hoped to take Ukraine in days when it launched its full-scale invasion on 24 February 2022.

Now, four years later — with hundreds of thousands dead, millions forced to flee, much of eastern Ukraine destroyed, and US-led peace talks still deadlocked over territory — it conceded that it hasn’t achieved all it wants in the country.

The war in Ukraine has triggered the largest refugee crisis in Europe since World War Two, with more than six million Ukrainians living as refugees outside the country, and nearly five million displaced inside its borders, according to a new report by the UN.

The warring countries are set to engage in another round of US-mediated peace talks over the coming days.
