Shower taboo exposed as older Aussies told to ‘wash less often’ | #yahooaustralia

Dermatologist Dr Emma Hiscutt told Yahoo Lifestyle that “over-washing” is common in Australia, and that people often “laugh” when she tells them that they’re “too clean”.

“As you get older, your skin gets thinner, and it gets drier, generally, because you produce less oil.”

Dr Hiscutt explained, “If you find that you always need moisturiser after a shower, if your skin flakes, and feels tight or burning, then it’s on the drier scale, and you need to wash less often.”

“I think generally for over 65-year-olds, I would suggest pushing showering out to every other day.”

“If they have extremely dry, flaky skin… then once a week would be fine.”

But she stressed that “If you find that, at the end of the day, your skin is not dry, it’s oily… then definitely showering every day is still worth doing.”
