The United Nations has warned the conflict in Sudan is spiralling out of control and urged warring parties to come to the negotiating table. Secretary-General António Guterres has described the city of El Fasher as an epicentre of suffering marked by hunger, violence and displacement. Rebel forces are accused of carrying out mass killings.
The death toll from Typhoon Kalmaegi in the Philippines has risen to at least 66. The powerful storm unleashed heavy rain and extensive flooding on the most populated island of Cebu and across the central region of the country. Many homes and buildings have been destroyed forcing hundreds of thousands to evacuate. The Philippines has experienced a string of natural disasters in recent weeks.
At least seven people have died after a large cargo plane crashed shortly after take-off in the US state of Kentucky. The aircraft was departing the company’s global aviation hub in Louisville when it crashed into a nearby neighbourhood and burst into flames.
In a bumper night for Democrats, voters have handed the party several major election wins, none more closely watched than the race in New York. Zohran Mamdani elected its next mayor. The Democratic Socialist becomes the first Muslim and the first of Indian descent to lead the largest city in the United States.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy has visited troops near the city of Pokrovsk in the eastern Donbass region where the fiercest fighting with Russian forces is taking place. Moscow claims to have the initiative there and several other hotspots on the frontline but the Ukrainian President claims his forces are inflicting significant damage on the enemy while asking, once again, for more American assistance.
