Swiss researchers are testing an unusual natural weapon against glacier melt: sheep wool. On the Tsanfleuron Glacier, wool blankets are being compared with conventional synthetic coverings designed to protect ice from heat and sunlight. Early observations suggest the biodegradable wool can provide protection comparable to synthetic materials while reducing plastic pollution. The experiment could also create a new use for large amounts of Swiss wool that would otherwise be discarded. But researchers stress that covering glaciers cannot replace the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and tackle climate change at its source.
