Syrian authorities have held the first hearings of the public trial of members of the regime of Bashar al-Assad, including the former president.
Key regime figures considered its worst offenders are being held to account for alleged crimes against civilians, including al-Assad who is being tried in absentia.
Atef Najib, a former general accused of overseeing a brutal crackdown on protesters in 2011, was the only defendant to appear in person before a Damascus court.
