The competitive side of lion dancing

Lion dancing is a massive part of Lunar New Year celebrations, but did you also know it’s also a competitive sport?

A lion dancing troupe in Brisbane – which has been performing for more than three decades – has just returned from competing in Malaysia and will be heading for another international event later this year.

Jordan Do has been lion dancing for almost a decade and is also teaching children the artform – which dates back to imperial China.

“It’s definitely a team sport, you know, the lion … can’t dance without the music and music can’t perform without the lions,” Do said.
