Despite being born Charles Philip Arthur George and it being quite common for sovereigns to choose a regnal name that differs from their first name, Charles ascended the throne as Charles III—340 years since Charles II had been king.

One of Charles’ former royal butlers Grant Harrold said at a launch event for his new book, “I had a conversation [with Charles] and… he explained to me about the different titles he could use. And we, myself and other colleagues, discussed it and we were all convinced he would [become] George VII.”

“With his grandson George, maybe he felt he should be the next George VII. Maybe he feels that it would be a nice thing to let him have that.”

Although both Edward VII and George VI’s first name was Albert, and Queen Victoria’s first name was Alexandrina, it might be becoming customary for monarchs to use their actual first name as their regnal name.
