Judges in the global competition described Jarno Coone’s (lack of) work as looking “like kids’ hair after a lice treatment gone horribly wrong.”
“They’ve obviously not spent any money on it,” said another.
Coone, who lives in Kyneton in regional Victoria, says he doesn’t let his garden grow wild to annoy his neighbours. He says he is “proud to get the message out there for water conservation and living more harmoniously with nature”. “I really do believe it is better for the environment,” he says.
The world’s ugliest lawn competition, which began in Gotland, Sweden, as a stunt to promote water conservation, is now in its third year.
