‘This has to stop’: Radical cut to tobacco excise has to be made to ‘snuff out’ illegal market

Liberal MP Mary Aldred says a “radical cut” to the tobacco excise is essential to “snuff out” the illegal market.

“We’ve done some further work with the Parliamentary Budget Office on a figure of 80 per cent,” Ms Aldred told News24 host Jaimee Rogers.

“That would show billions being able to be clawed back to the legal market, but most importantly snuffing out the illegal market.

“This has got to stop, so we’ve put a huge amount of work into the modelling side of this.”
