Bangladesh has marked one year since former prime minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country in a helicopter to India, after weeks of nationwide student-led protests in which the UN estimates at least 1400 people were killed.
Hasina is currently being tried in absentia in Bangladesh’s domestic crimes tribunal for crimes against humanity. Bangladesh will hold its first elections since protests toppled its former prime minister next February, the country’s interim leader said on the anniversary of her overthrow.
Founding Member of Naripokkho and Head of the Reform Commission on Women, Shireen Huq, joined The World from Dhaka to discuss the significance of the anniversary.
