The Trump administration has brokered a major deal to halt large offshore wind projects along the US East Coast.
Officials reached an agreement with energy giant TotalEnergies to abandon two planned wind farms off New York and North Carolina.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said the move shifts money away from “expensive” wind power and toward reliable American energy.
“We’re partnering with TotalEnergies to unleash nearly $1 billion that was tied up in a lease deposit that was directed towards the prior administration’s subsidies that were pushing expensive weather-dependent offshore wind,” Burgum said.
