US President Donald Trump has downplayed comments from Iran’s supreme leader warning of a potential regional conflict, stating: “We have the biggest, most powerful ships in the world over there, very close … and hopefully we’ll make a deal. If we don’t make a deal, then we’ll find out whether or not he was right.”
The US has built up its naval presence in the Middle East after Trump repeatedly threatened Iran with intervention if it did not agree to a nuclear deal or failed to stop killing protesters.
A diplomatic solution remains on the cards, with Tehran saying it is ready for “fair” negotiations that do not seek to curtail its defensive capabilities.
