Trump holds first Board of Peace meeting

US President Donald Trump has held his first Board of Peace meeting with officials from around the world. More than US$10 billion ($14.1 billion) in funding was pledged to rebuild Gaza and maintain order there.

Trump did not explain exactly where the money would go and whether Congress had approved the contribution he announced for the institution.

Some Gazans remain cautious of the plans, with one resident sceptical of reconstruction promises and another concerned about mismanagement of the funds.

The board, which includes dozens of world leaders, was assembled after the Trump administration, teaming up with Qatar and Egypt, negotiated a ceasefire in October to halt two years of devastating war in Gaza.

Since the declaration of a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip on October 10, 2025, deadly Israeli strikes have continued according to Gaza Civil Defence Agencies. Earlier this week, Gaza medics and rescue teams reported 11 people killed in an airstrike.

Israeli officials said strikes have been in response to Hamas violations, as Hamas officials say Israel is responsible for the ceasefire breach.

The plan’s second phase calls for the disarmament of Hamas, whose unprecedented October 7, 2023 attack on Israel triggered a major offensive.

In Gaza’s south, tens of thousands of people still live in tents and makeshift shelters. Despite the ceasefire, shortages remain in Gaza, whose battered economy and material damage have rendered most residents at least partly dependent on humanitarian aid for their basic needs.

“However, humanitarian partners report that impediments persist, and in recent weeks, the entry of humanitarian supplies from Egypt has remained critically low due to high rejection rates by Israeli authorities,” UN secretary-general spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said.
