US President Donald Trump has hiked base tariffs on imports into his country to 15 per cent after the US Supreme Court struck down his Liberation Day import tax regime and deemed his use of emergency powers unlawful.
The White House is using powers vested by Section 122 to impose the new tariffs, which can only be extended with congressional approval after 150 days in effect.
Journalist Jay Newtown-Small says importers are facing ‘legal limbo’ as Trump’s slim majority in congress will face great difficulty in securing approval.
