US President Donald Trump says he hopes to meet in person with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, as soon as next week. He’ll then hold a follow-up meeting involving himself, Mr Putin and Ukraine’s leader, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
It follows what Mr Trump says was ‘great progress’ in talks between his special envoy and the Russian President in Moscow.
Mr Zelenskyy says he believes Russia is now more ‘inclined’ to a ceasefire, and US pressure is a key reason. The latest includes additional tariffs on India, a major buyer of Russian oil.
Mr Trump has indicated that further sanctions, designed to hit Russia’s economy, will likely go ahead.
