US President Donald Trump said he called off military strikes on Iran and that the countries have “made a great settlement” which would be formalised “pretty soon”.
Trump said he understands that Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has approved the deal and that the US would immediately lift its blockade on the Strait of Hormuz once it’s signed.
Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei added “the text is mostly finalised … [but] the problem is that the contradictions in America’s position have caused turbulence to this process”.
Trump has repeatedly claimed that a deal with Iran to end the war is “close”.
Now he says the final points have been “approved by all parties involved, including the United States, Israel, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Turkey, Pakistan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, Egypt, and others” according to a post by the president on Truth Social.
The war has killed thousands of people, mainly in Iran and Lebanon, and pushed up global oil prices since the US and Israel launched airstrikes on Iran on 28 February.
