Donald Trump’s crackdown on H-1B visas has put major Indian IT firms in the firing line, even as he honours Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella for technological innovation. The suspension of the PERM green-card process raises questions about America’s treatment of skilled immigrants and the contradiction between celebrating immigrant-led success and restricting immigration pathways. As the midterms approach, is Trump’s tough stance on foreign workers a populist political pitch? Research suggests skilled immigration can boost innovation, productivity and wages. With strategic cooperation between India and the US continuing, can Washington separate its partnership with India from its treatment of Indians?
