Ukraine and Russia have vowed to continue escalating hostilities after Moscow launched a massive barrage on Kyiv, killing at least 30 people, sending tens of thousands to shelters.
Journalists from the Agence France-Presse news agency in central and eastern Kyiv heard more than a dozen explosions and saw residents rushing to shelter in metro stations.
On the morning after, locals stood on the rubble of destroyed apartment blocks ripped apart by the barrage, as smoke poured over the Kyiv skyline.
With the war now well into its fourth year, Ukraine has recently stepped up long-range drone attacks inside Russia, targeting energy infrastructure and military targets.
Russian officials have reported repeated strikes in border regions and claim to have captured the city of Kostiantynivka in the Donetsk region, which Ukrainian officials have called “fake claims”.
