UN votes to terminate southern Lebanon peacekeeping force | US floats plan to disarm Hezbollah

After nearly 50 years, the UN Security Council has voted to terminate the peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon – bowing to demands from the US and its ally, Israel.

The Interim Force in Lebanon – or Unifil – will be wound down over a year, in an attempt to prevent a dangerous security vacuum which could further destabilise the region.

The mandate for the force, including Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon and the disarmament of Hezbollah, has never been achieved.

Diplomacy through the US continues.
