US and Japan expand military presence in Australia

Australia’s long-standing military alliance with US forces is expanding.

RAAF Base Tindal south of Darwin is being expanded so it can host six nuclear-capable B-52 bombers. Osprey aircraft used by US marines will remain in Australia for the first time, following an annual rotational force. And as part of its military cooperation with the US and Australia, the federal government says Japan will also deploy soldiers to Darwin soon.
