Federal government revealed details of its response to 50 per cent tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, as he escalates his trade war against Canada. Speaking in Ottawa, Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne announced that, “Canada will impose counter-tariffs of up-to 15, 25 or 50 per cent, on $27.6 billion in imports from the United States of America,” beginning Sept. 8th. Trade talks collapsed between Canada and the United States late Friday night, following which Prime Minister Mark Carney said Ottawa would be retaliating with “dollar-for-dollar” tariffs.
Officials urged the importance of supporting small and medium businesses in Canada, with Industry Minister Mélanie Joly encouraging people to buy local, saying, “when you choose a Canadian product, you’re not only putting pressure on the U.S., right now you’re protecting jobs.”
