US Federal Reserve raises interest rates for first time since 2023

The United States Federal Reserve has voted unanimously to raise interest rates by 0.25 percentage points despite pressure from US President Donald Trump to lower them.

Federal Reserve chair Kevin Warsh said the rate rise, the first one since July 2023, would support an eventual return to its 2 per cent target for inflation.

It was a blow for Trump, who appointed Warsh in the hopes that he would lower interest rates to 1 per cent.
