US refuelling aircraft crashes in Iraq. What was it doing there?

The US military says the crash of a KC-135 refuelling aircraft in western Iraq was not caused by hostile or friendly fire. Six service members are believed to have been on board when the aircraft went down. The US Central Command said two aircraft were involved in the incident — while one went down, the other landed safely. The incident raises questions about what the plane was doing in Iraqi airspace and how large a military presence the US still maintains in the country.
