The US Senate has voted to end the nation’s longest government shutdown, which stretched to 40 days and disrupted everything from air travel to food aid.
Sixty senators, including eight Democrats who sided with Republicans, supported a funding package to keep federal agencies running until January 2026 and restore back pay to thousands of unpaid workers.
The deal also includes funding for food assistance and a promise to hold a future vote on extending key Affordable Care Act subsidies, a major Democratic demand.
If approved by the House this week, the bill will head to President Trump for his signature to officially reopen the government.
The shutdown had left federal employees unpaid for weeks, delayed welfare payments and grounded thousands of domestic flights.
