US transfers IS detainees from Syria to Iraq

The United States military has begun transferring potentially thousands of self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) group fighters from Syrian prisons to Iraq, as it continues to wind down operations in northeastern Syria.

The US military said its forces have transferred 150 IS group detainees, announcing an effort in a statement on Wednesday that could eventually see 7,000 prisoners moved out of Syria.

Around 50 Australians are believed to be held in IS group camps and prisons across the region.
