Former head of Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service John Sawers has cautioned against using the term “regime change” to describe the US operation against President Nicolás Maduro, saying the Trump administration is “dealing with the regime”.

Sawers said he also believes the action “gives a licence to people like the Russians and the Chinese to use force in their own neighbourhood.

When asked about protests in Iran, Sawers said calls for regime change have an “unpredictable effect”, which can inadvertently cause Iranians to rally around the flag.
