Sky News host Caleb Bond warns Victoria’s plan to enshrine working-from-home rights could backfire, with businesses turning to contractors instead of permanent staff.
“The 47 per cent is businesses that say they would go to contractors instead of hiring permanent full-time because then they could be a bit rubbery about whether or not they have to do the work-from-home stuff,” Mr Bond said.
“The Victorian government is saying, well, we’re going to do something to help the workers, which is we’re going to give them the enshrined right to work from home.
“What you will have here is a situation where in the name of increasing workers’ rights, you’ll end up with fewer workers’ rights.
“All the employers will go bugger that; I’ll find a way to employ them, i.e. as a contractor, where I don’t have to deal with all this crap.
“You start to shoot yourself in the foot, and I think that is where Victoria is going.”
