A rare whale shark has been spotted off Southern California as unusually warm Pacific waters draw tropical marine species farther north. The fourteen to sixteen foot shark was recorded between Santa Barbara Island and Malibu during a strengthening El Niño. Whale sharks normally favour tropical and warm temperate waters, making sightings in Southern California highly unusual. Other warm water visitors, including manta rays and devil rays, have also been reported as ocean temperatures rise. We examine how El Niño is changing California’s marine environment and shifting where some of the ocean’s most remarkable species appear.
