What are the challenges for securing shipping through the Strait of Hormuz?

As the war in the Middle East continues, Iran has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz.

About a fifth of global oil and natural gas normally passes through the strait, but traffic through the strait has dropped by 97% since on February 28, according to United Nations data.

As the only sea exit for oil- and gas-producing countries, such as Kuwait, Iran, Iraq, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, its closure is creating challenges around the world.
