This vast Atlantic ocean circulation helps move heat northwards and plays a major role in Europe’s climate. If it weakens dramatically, parts of Europe could face much harsher winters, even as the planet continues to warm.
In a worst-case scenario, temperatures in parts of northern Europe could fall sharply, sea ice could extend much farther south, and agriculture and infrastructure could struggle to cope.
