What is the IRGC and why is Australia’s move against it complex?

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was set up shortly after the 1979 Islamic Revolution to protect the newly established Shi’ite Muslim clerical ruling system and protect the country from internal and external threats.

It’s separate from Iran’s regular armed forces.

Experts say Australia’s decision to list the IRGC as a terrorist group is legally complex, given its deep ties to Iran’s state apparatus.

The move, set to take effect once urgent legislation passes parliament, could complicate Australia’s dealings with Iran as a nation.
