Although Andrew will remain a Prince and, theoretically, retain the York dukedom – since his formal removal would require an act of parliament – he’ll no longer use the title, the Duke of York, and he’ll give up his membership of the Order of the Garter – Britain’s oldest and most senior order of chivalry.
Andrew’s former wife will cease to be the Duchess of York, and will instead only go by Sarah Ferguson – but the pair will continue to live in Windsor’s Royal Lodge.
Even so, the line of succession will not change, and since Prince Andrew stepped down as a working royal in 2019, the latest announcement means that his role will be even more diminished – to the point that he won’t attend this year’s Christmas celebrations at Sandringham.
The royal titles and positions of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson’s daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie however will not be affected by the announcement.
