A discarded SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket is about to collide with the Moon after drifting through space for more than a year. The four-tonne upper stage will hit the lunar surface at almost 8,700km/h, creating a new crater. There’s no danger to Earth, but scientists say the impact could provide new insights into the Moon, while highlighting the growing challenge of space junk. Astrophysicist Dr Brad Tucker explains what the collision means and what scientists hope to learn.
