According to both major retailers, it’s the preferred method to crack down on theft.
While there are plenty of stores that might ask to see your bags, Kmart and Bunnings are slightly different, as you’ll usually have to present your receipt to be scanned by a handheld machine at the exit.
Many people don’t bat an eyelid over the request, but there are some who question why it’s done this way, since bags aren’t usually checked to see that the receipt matches what you have.
Yahoo Lifestyle understands that the scanners confirm the receipt was printed recently.
It stops people from being able to buy an item one day, and then return later on to steal a bunch of things and present the same receipt.
