Firefighters and volunteers battled a wildfire near a residential area in Quito, Ecuador, on Sunday. Nearly 60 firefighters and 14 fire vehicles were deployed to tackle the blaze, with a helicopter also dropping water over the affected area. Residents joined emergency crews using hoses, buckets and water bottles as heavy smoke engulfed the area and infrastructure was damaged.
Quito Fire Commander Esteban Cardenas said the northern side of the fire had been contained and there was no immediate risk to residents, though crown fires in the lower area continued to pose challenges. No deaths or injuries were reported.
