The collapse of the AMOC would be catastrophic. How will we know when it’s coming?
In June, a research ship called the Sir David Attenborough set sail from the UK to studying in unprecedented detail how glaciers melt and clave icebergs into the seas around Greenland.
Climate change is rapidly speeding up and changing how this ice melt occurs, with potential impacts that threaten the existence of societies across Europe and beyond. That’s because this meltwater could shut down the AMOC ocean current that keeps Europe wet and warm.
Now, researchers are using this information to build an ambitious early earning system that can tell us if and when the AMOC could implode – or if we have already pushed past a tipping point of no return.
