‘Worst possible choice’: New supreme leader chosen despite ‘opposition’ from Iran clerics

Sky News US analyst Michael Ware discusses the reported appointment of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba, as the new Iranian Supreme Leader.

“I don’t think that bodes well – why? Because there was opposition to him within the clerical organisation inside Iran, they don’t want to see a succession by blood,” he told Sky News Australia.

“They believe … it shouldn’t come down bloodlines; it should be chosen each time independently.

“But more importantly … his appointment would be a signal that the Revolutionary Guard Corps is still very much in power and is consolidating that power.”
