But Salam Qaro, a Yazidi refugee who spoke no English when he arrived in Armidale in 2019, says he hopes refugees would be exempt from the policy should One Nation succeed in having it implemented. “We have a good relationship with Barnaby,” he says.
Since 2018, the New South Wales city of Armidale has been a designated site for resettling refugees. It’s a town that sits within the electorate of Barnaby Joyce. While Joyce was a key voice supporting Armidale’s establishment as a refugee resettlement site, he’s since defected from the Nationals to One Nation.
Guardian Australia’s community affairs reporter Adeshola Ore traveled to Armidale last month to speak with Joyce and community members, including refugees, to find out how the town squares with One Nation’s vision of a monoculture.
