Norway bids its final farewell to King Harald V on Wednesday with a funeral attended by royalty and leaders from across Europe and beyond, who will pay tribute to the popular monarch’s 35-year reign.
Harald, who died on Aug. 28 aged 89, was Europe’s oldest monarch and had modernized the royal house, but refused to follow in the footsteps of other aging monarchs who have abdicated in recent times. His son immediately became King Haakon VIII and last week pledged an oath of allegiance to Norway’s constitution in parliament.
People are queuing outside Norway’s Royal Palace in Oslo to pay their final respects to King Harald V ahead of his state funeral. The late monarch is lying in state in the Palace Chapel, which remains open to the public through September 8th. His funeral will take place at Oslo Cathedral on September 9th, with a ceremonial procession carrying his coffin from the Royal Palace through central Oslo. Norway has observed a national period of mourning since Harald’s death, with thousands leaving flowers, candles and messages in his memory.
