While you might think that having the toys in soapy water would keep them clean, there are some that can get really dirty if you’re not careful – which is what Melbourne-based mum Britney realised after squeezing out some bath toys from Kmart.
She said, “My son used them in the bath and stuff would constantly come out… So I squeezed some water in one of them, and all of this mouldy, slimy stuff came out.”
Some toys have holes designed to suck in and spit out water, which can be fun for kids to play with in the bath. However, if water gets trapped in these toys, they can be a breeding ground for bacteria and mould.
This isn’t just an issue plaguing Kmart toys, it can happen to any toy where water can get into it and fester.
Mould expert Dr Cameron Jones urged people to buy toys that don’t have holes in them, as it won’t be able to absorb any water. But if you do have a range of those toys already, you can use boiling water to get all the gunk out of it and leave it to dry.
Once that’s done, he suggested you could plug the hole so that it stays clean on the inside.
