US and Iran ‘made good progress’ in nuclear talks: Iranian foreign minister

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the US and Iran “still have differences of opinion” over Iran’s nuclear program, but they have come “very close to an understanding”.

“It was decided that the next round of negotiations will take place soon, in less than a week,” he said.

The Iranians, he added, had clearly expressed their demand for lifting of US sanctions, which Washington has long insisted will only come after deep concessions from Tehran.

The talks in Geneva, mediated by Oman, aim to resolve a long-standing dispute and avert new US strikes on Iran or a far-reaching conflict. As the US continues to amass more warships and aircraft in the Middle East, the possibility of a regional war appears increasingly threatening.
