Japan is famous for its spotless streets, but public bins are incredibly hard to come by – even in major cities like Tokyo.
Melbourne traveller Liam visited earlier this year and was surprised he had nowhere to put his rubbish.
Speaking to Yahoo Lifestyle, he said, “You end up just taking it home with you. It was a little bit frustrating, but it was kind of more funny… Some of the bins that are next to the vending machines say not to use the bin, and it’s just really weird. I don’t really understand how that works.”
And Liam isn’t alone with his mild frustration. The Japanese National Tourism Organisation (JNTO) conducted a survey in 2025, which found the lack of rubbish areas was the number one issue for 22% of travellers.
But the issue is set to hopefully be rectified in the coming months. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government committed earlier this year to rolling out bins at 10 locations in the Akihabara district, a popular area in Tokyo.
