Pet Insurance Australia revealed that there are “large spikes” in chocolate poisoning claims over Easter and Christmas—with the most expensive claim recently costing a pet owner more than $3,000.
Veterinarian Dr Will Maginness told Yahoo Lifestyle that over Easter, “There’s just a lot of unusual activity… there are new treats and new activities that the dogs aren’t probably used to.”
“The emergency veterinary clinics are under the pump all the time from Friday to Monday.”
Although chocolate poisoning is a major concern, Dr Maginness reminded Aussies that raisins and sultanas are also toxic for pets, and even small amounts can cause acute kidney injury.
He advised anyone who suspects that their pet has eaten something toxic to call a vet immediately so that a professional can recommend the best course of action.
