Bad weather impacts Sri Lanka’s recovery one month after deadly Cyclone Ditwah

Sri Lanka is facing a challenging recovery after being hit by Cyclone Ditwah, with recovery efforts in some areas nearly one month on now hampered by more heavy rain and flooding.

The disaster left nearly 650 people dead and impacted almost 2-million others.

Around 300,000 residents are still displaced.

The World Bank estimates the cost of the damage exceeds $6 billion dollars AUD. This week, India pledged a $670 million assistance package for cyclone relief and repair.

Australian medical student, Valluvan Thillairajah, whose parents are originally from Sri Lanka, travelled there with a charity to deliver emergency aid.

He’s been documenting the aftermath of the cyclone, and shared his experience with SBS World News.
