Israel finance minister Bezalel Smotrich has approved a plan that he says “buries the idea of a Palestinian state”.
The E1 proposal would extend a major Israeli settlement, in effect cutting East Jerusalem off from the occupied West Bank.
The plan has been under consideration for more than two decades, but was never enacted due to international pressure.
