Ethiopia’s federal government is facing the threat of being overthrown following the formation of an alliance of seven armed groups from across the vast, multi-ethnic country.
The coalition calls itself the Ethiopian Peoples’ Forces Alliance for Survival and brings together long-standing opposition groups. Its formation poses a risk of return to civil war and widespread suffering.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed says he’s confident the military will be able fight it off if needed, saying “we do not have an iota of fear regarding Ethiopia’s sovereignty”.
He’s also accused neighbour and previous nemesis Eritrea of being behind the move.

But the armed groups say they’ve already been in negotiations for more than a year and are ready to work together to topple Ahmed’s government.
