This is never-before-seen cell phone footage from the 2010 Chilean mine rescue. In August 2010, a mine collapse in Chile trapped 33 miners more than 2,000 feet below the surface.
Their ordeal even drew help from NASA. Because of the agency’s experience keeping astronauts healthy during long periods of isolation in extreme environments, NASA experts advised the rescue effort on the miners’ physical and mental health, nutrition and the design of the rescue capsule.
National Geographic recovered this footage, which captures the miners making a pact to survive. The footage is featured in the documentary series Chilean Mine Rescue: Race Against Time.
