Susie Burrell settled the controversial debate when she told Yahoo Lifestyle that consumers should “definitely” keep their eggs in the fridge.
She explained, “It helps to reduce the risk of bacterial growth, keeps the temperature stable and extends the shelf life of eggs, which is helpful when fresh food is increasingly expensive.”
“Not temperature-controlled eggs won’t last as long and have a higher risk of food-borne illness.”
While eggs can be kept in the fridge for four to six weeks, eggs in the pantry only last one to two weeks.
Susie added, “If you are unsure about an egg’s freshness, before eating it, place it in a container of water – if it floats, don’t eat it.”
A spokesperson for Aldi agreed that “While our eggs are safely displayed on shelves at room temperature in accordance with food safety standards, we always recommend that customers store their eggs in the refrigerator once they get home.”
