Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado says she remains confident the remnants of a “criminal regime” will ultimately collapse, allowing an orderly transition to free elections.
Speaking in Washington after meeting President Donald Trump – and gifting him her Nobel Peace Prize – Machado pushed for the opposition to have a role in shaping Venezuela’s future.
Trump has instead backed interim leader Delcy Rodríguez, prioritising stability and access to Venezuela’s oil reserves after Maduro’s removal.
Machado said she intends to return home soon, describing Rodríguez as a “communist” who controls a repressive system but not the military, making her position unstable.
